“My dearest love!” – Love Letters Through the Ages
“My dearest love!” – With words like these, people have begun, for centuries, a daring act: entrusting their own feelings to someone else. The love letter is more than paper and ink. It carries hope and longing within it – and the quiet plea for reciprocation. In it are reflected both personal emotions and societal ideas about love, marriage, and partnership.
The exhibition traces the paths of written love, from its early literary forms through the 19th century to the digital messages of the present. A moving letter from 1844, tender postcard exchanges, artfully crafted love tokens, and literary testimonies show
how people remained connected across distances.
With every line, it becomes visible how language, expression, and means of transmission change – and yet always serve the same purpose: to create closeness. What endures is the courage to write down love.
