Small works of art and precious collectors’ items – discover the unique stamps and postal history of the Principality of Liechtenstein

Original and digital! The Liechtenstein PostalMuseum showcases every stamp issued by Liechtenstein in intricate detail. It is also home to a wide range of exhibits and documents providing insights into the development of the postal system since the 15th century.

Liechtenstein has been issuing its own stamps since 1912. Thanks to their artistic designs and elaborate production processes, stamps from Liechtenstein still have a special status in the world of philately today. The majority of the stamps issued by Liechtenstein are on display in the permanent exhibition.

As early as the 15th century, the Lindau Messenger operated between Lindau on Lake Constance and Milan, passing through present-day Liechtenstein. The route of this precursor to the modern postal service is shown in an interactive presentation.

The Liechtenstein PostalMuseum provides a representative crosssection of the entire philately of the Principality of Liechtenstein. Original sketches by designers, as well as printing plates and stamp sheets, show the creation process all the way through to the finished stamp.

Exquisite issues for collectors around the world

Extraordinary production and processing methods are often used in Liechtenstein’s stamp-making process. For example, laser-cutting is used to give motifs a silhouette-like appearance. In 2019 an embroidered stamp was issued for the first time to mark Liechtenstein’s 300th anniversary. Collection sheets with several motifs are issued twice a year. Thanks to their high-quality design, stamps issued by Liechtenstein are highly coveted by visitors as gifts and souvenirs

Every postage stamp since 1912

Liechtenstein has been issuing its own stamps since 1912. The design for the country’s very first stamp can is on show in the Liechtenstein TreasureChamber. It was created by Koloman Moser, one of the co-founders of the Vienna Secession and the Vienna Workshop.

The Liechtenstein PostalMuseum has a copy of every postage stamp issued by the country’s postal service. Due to the vast number of stamps in the collection, it is only possible to show a selection at any one time. Visitors keen to see every stamp can do so using the online stamp catalogue.

Interactive journey back in time

The Lindau Messenger was a regular connection from Lindau on Lake Constance via present-day Liechtenstein to Milan. Until 1826 it operated once a week and transported mail, goods and passengers. Ulrich Fugger from the famous Fugger merchant family in Augsburg used its services as well as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe on one of his journeys to Italy. The Liechtenstein PostalMuseum has an interactive presentation showing the route taken by the Lindau Messenger and selected stops along the way.
