Worthy of a Prince - Giambologna’s Mars

In honour of the 80th birthday of Prince Hans-Adam II von und zu Liechtenstein, the Princely House of Liechtenstein is celebrating its recent acquisition of Giambologna’s Mars – one of the most famous small bronzes of the late Italian Renaissance – by making it the centrepiece of a new exhibition.

With its heroic pose and concentrated energy, the figure seems to embody the inner strength that imbues a ruler with true dignity. It was created in Florence, where the Flemish-born artist worked for the Medici court.

Mars is accompanied by a selection of other small bronzes from the Princely Collections that were produced after designs and models by Giambologna and his workshop assistants, among them Antonio and Giovanni Francesco Susini, Pietro Tacca and Adriaen de Vries. The presentation not only showcases Giambologna’s consummate mastery and the outstanding quality of the Mars, it also allows visitors to appreciate the differences in workmanship, patination and finesse of execution of the bronzes on display.

The exhibition of outstanding works from the Princely Collections takes the viewer on a journey to Florence at the time of the Medici and sheds light on the artistic wealth of the late Renaissance. At the same time, it pays tribute to Prince Hans-Adam II von und zu Liechtenstein and his role in continuing the illustrious tradition of the enthusiastic princely collector and patron of the arts.

The Princely Collections are guests at the Liechtenstein National Museum and are exhibiting this very special highlight from their collection for the first time.
