“From Heaven Above to Earth I Come” - An Angelic Christmasexhibition
30 November 2013 until 5 January 2014
The Gospels of St. Luke and St. Mathew relate that angels appear on numerous occasions during the Nativity Story. These heavenly messengers convey godly messa-ges to the human protagonists. Martin Luther wrote the Christmas carol “From Heaven Above to Earth I Come” in the year 1524. The 15 verses describe the Annunciation of the birth of Christ by the Angel of the Lord and the subsequent visit of the shepherds to the crib. However, the Bible does not relate what these heavenly messengers looked like. Nor is it explained how humans were able to recognise them for what they were. Despite this, a tradition of angel pictures has developed. Depictions of angels in the form of Christmas cards or decorative items have become an integral part of Christmas festivities.
